Hours at a screen quietly load your neck. Here is why it hurts, what makes it worse, and how to reverse it for good.

Every centimetre your head drifts forward toward a screen multiplies the load on your neck. Your head weighs around five kilograms held upright; tilt it forward to read a phone or monitor and the effective load on the neck can climb several times higher. Hold that posture eight hours a day and the muscles fatigue, the joints stiffen, and the discs take strain they were never designed for. That is tech neck.

Why it keeps coming back

You stretch, it helps for an hour, then the pain returns — because the stretch does not change the underlying load or the weakness that lets your posture collapse in the first place. The neck creeps forward again the moment you focus on your screen. Lasting relief needs two things stretching alone cannot give: unload the irritated segment, then rebuild the deep muscles that hold your head in a neutral position.

The warning signs to take seriously

  • A dull ache at the base of the neck by late afternoon
  • Tight, knotted muscles across the tops of the shoulders
  • Headaches that start at the back of the head
  • Tingling or pain radiating into an arm or hand — a sign the nerve is involved

What treatment looks like

  • Cervical decompression to relieve the compressed segment
  • Laser therapy for the inflamed, overworked muscles
  • A short daily routine to hold the correction between visits
  • Simple workstation changes so the problem stops recurring
You cannot stretch your way out of a posture you sit in for eight hours. You have to rebuild the support that holds it.

The changes that make it stick

Raise your screen so the top of it sits at eye level, so your head no longer drops forward. Take a short movement break every half hour. And do the few minutes of daily strengthening we prescribe — it is small, but it is what holds the correction in place. Pair those habits with treatment, and most desk-related neck pain settles and stays settled.

Frequently asked questions

Can tech neck cause permanent damage?

Left unaddressed for years it can accelerate wear in the neck's discs and joints. Caught and corrected, the neck recovers well — which is why it is worth treating early rather than pushing through it.

Are the headaches related to my neck?

Often, yes. Tension headaches that begin at the base of the skull are frequently driven by tight, overworked neck muscles, and they usually ease as the neck is treated.

How quickly can I expect improvement?

Many people feel looser and less achy within the first week or two, with the workstation and exercise changes making the improvement last.
